Using the MD5 sum is a way to check both file integrity and authenticity. If the MD5 sum is not correct, you should re-download the file.

Here are instructions to check the MD5 sum on the different operating systems:

Windows does not come with a MD5 sum utility. You must download one from another location, preferably one that you trust.

You can download HashCalc for instance.

Mac OS X

  1. Open a terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal)
  2. Type "md5", type a space, drag the ISO file into the terminal window, and press Enter
  3. The command line returns the MD5 sum

Most Linux distributions come with a MD5 sum utility. Of course, Joli OS includes one:

  1. Open a terminal with Alt + F1 (more details)
  2. Navigate to the directory where the file is stored (using the cd command)
  3. Type: md5sum file-name (the output gives you the MD5 sum)
