Please note that you should use this process only if the Jolicloud USB Creator does not support your current operating system.

You will need to create a Jolicloud USB key to boot from to install Joli OS. Whether you use a USB key or a flash disk, the process is the same.

Please make sure your USB key is formatted into FAT16 or FAT32.

The process to create a Jolicloud USB key depends on the operating system:

Note: When you try Jolicloud USB Creator, if you get an error message saying "Another program is currently accessing the device. Close all other programs and try again.", just try again after disabling the floppy disk drive in the device manager.

1. Click on this link to download the Image Writer for Windows

2. Unzip the file and double-click on the following file: W32DiskImager.exe. If your Windows account does not have administration rights, right-click on the .exe file and select 'Run As Administrator'.

3. Change the file extension of the Joli OS ISO from *.iso to *.img. Indeed, our ISO can also behave like an IMG understandable by W32DiskImager (more details).

4. Select the Joli OS IMG file.

5. Insert your USB key in your computer.

6. Click the refresh button on the right and select the drive letter which corresponds to your USB key.

7. Click the 'Write' button and wait until it is done.

1. Open a Terminal by clicking on 'Finder', 'Applications', 'Utilities', and then 'Terminal'.

2. Type the command below and press 'Enter' to get the list of devices on your computer:

diskutil list

3. Insert your USB key in your computer.

4. To determine which new device node is assigned to your USB key (e.g. /dev/disk2), type in once again the command below:

diskutil list

5. Type in the following command to unmount your USB key (be sure to replace /dev/diskN with the correct device node name from step 4):

diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN

You will now see the following message: "Unmount of all volumes on diskN was successful".

6. Type in the text below but do not press ‘Enter’ just yet:

sudo dd of=/dev/diskN if=

Drag'n drop the Joli OS ISO file into the Terminal window to complete the command. Press ‘Enter’ once you see something like the text below:

sudo dd of=/dev/diskN if=/Users/username/[...]/Joli-OS-1.2.iso

7. Next you will be asked for the password of your computer. Type it in and press ‘Enter’. Once the process is complete, you will see a confirmation message. Do not remove the key from the computer until you see this message.

8. To remove the USB key, type in the command below:

diskutil eject /dev/diskN

Note: The Linux installation program requires Python 2.4 or later. Python is standard on most modern Linux desktops. If you don't have it, install the 'python' package according to your Linux distribution's instructions.

1. Click here to download a program called 'Linux Image Writer'.

2. Insert your USB key in your computer.

3. If you already have content on the USB key, please backup any necessary content, close all folders, and unmount all drives related to it.

4. Open a Terminal and go to the directory where you downloaded the file:

cd /the/path/to/your/directory

5. Change the script permissions and run the program:

chmod a+x
sudo ./ Joli-OS-1.2.iso
